A lyrical tragedy, Yerma focuses on a childless woman living in rural Spain. Her desperate desire for motherhood becomes an obsession that eventually drives her to commit a horrific crime. Lorca’s modern masterpiece explores gender roles and the dynamics of both personal and cultural expectations and the impact they have on individuals and their relationships.

Beauty never showed up. After centuries under the curse, the Beast and his one remaining magical servant have moved into a shabby apartment near a 7-11, hoping for a lower cost of living and better luck with girls. In the threatening, impossible, completely ordinary world of paying rent and taking public transportation, is a happy ending even possible? Are there witches in Chicago? Is this hat sufficient? And can a good story and a little light save the day?

Things are looking up for recovering alcoholic Jackie and his girlfriend Veronica—until Jackie spots another man’s hat in their apartment and embarks on a sublimely incompetent quest for vengeance. Fast-paced and uproarious, Motherfucker is a gleefully foul-mouthed look at modern love and other addictions.
Capital T Theatre is proud to present the regional premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ outrageously funny and touching comedy directed by Cap T company member Carrie Klypchak starring Austin favorites Ben Wolfe (The Pain and the Itch), Indigo Rael (Exit, Pursued by a Bear), Antoinette Robinson (Mr. Marmalade), Rommel Sulit (Men of Tortuga) and Aaron Alexander (Behanding in Spokane).

A genre-defying mixture of absurd humor, serious drama, and political thriller, the play examines the nature of evil and the role of the artist as activist. In Weimar Germany, an idealistic group of artists naively assumes they can stop Hitler's juggernaut through art and political action. Ultimately, the friends must choose paths they'll take: resistance, compromise, exile, or compliance.

Kirk R. Tuck on Capturing An Epic Moment in Zach's Laramie Project, Visual Science Lab blog, May 12

Jaston Williams in the Laramie Project, Zach Theatre, Austin Texas, 2012 (image: Kirk R. Tuck)

Austin-based photographer Kirk R. Tuck writes and illustrates an article at his blog The Visual Science Lab about capturing an epic moment in the Zach Theatre's March-May 2012 production of The Laramie Project by Moisés and the Tectonic Theatre Project:

An interesting job with mixed light sources. On the stage.

I had several assignments during the course of the day this past Friday but this set of images for Zachary Scott Theatre was the most interesting to photograph. There's a scene at the end of the play, The Laramie Project, where one of the actors (Jaston Williams, of Greater Tuna and Tuna Texas fame) stands on a square riser covered in grass and is pelted by rain as he stretches his hands out from his side.  In the context of the play it's a very powerful moment.

I saw the scene the first time ten years ago during a dress rehearsal shoot and we captured it on film.  The shot was okay but not quite what we wanted.  Then, ten years later, I shot the scene again, during a recent dress rehearsal.  Technical issues kept me from getting the shot the marketing director and I both wanted.  The spot light on the actor was too contrasty (for the camera...just right for the audience) and the letters across the back were not bright enough.  The slow shutter speed we needed in order to dig into the darkness meant that we didn't get any sort of frozen motion on the rain drops.  We knew we'd have to light the shot to get the image that we both could visualize in our heads.

Directed by Guest Director Beryl Knifton. Affluent couples gather in the posh residence of a couple for a dinner party celebrating their hosts’ tenth anniversary. When they arrive, they discover there are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the host – the deputy mayor of New York City - has shot himself through the earlobe. Complications arise when, given everyone’s upper class status, they decide they need to do everything possible to conceal the evening’s events from the local police and the media. Rated PG. Photographing Suzan-Lori Parks at work. Behind the scenes at Zach.

Suzann-Lori Parks (image: Kirk R. Tuck)

Just like 90% of other humans I like to think I'm pretty smart. Reality? Probably right in the middle of the Bell Curve. Smart enough to know about the Bell Curve but not smart enough to make up my own curve. But my profession tends to give me reality checks all the time. Yesterday's reality check came courtesy my friends at Zachary Scott Theatre. They asked me to photograph Suzan-Lori Parks at work. Don't know who Suzan-Lori Parks is? See, we're all sitting right in the middle of the big Bell Curve....together.

Suzann-Lori Parks (image: Kirk R. Tuck)

Suzan-Lori Parks is the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for playwriting, is the recipient of a MacArthur Genius Award, won a Guggenheim, nominated for a Tony award, and so much more. She's in town to put the finishing touches and polish on her latest work, The Book of Grace. Here's what the folks at Zach have to say: . . . .
