(*) Profile by Deborah Martin: Chet Walker Directs Pippin at Trinity University

Quick on his feet for 'Pippin'

Broadway director and choreographer Chet Walker is all about saying yes.

Would he be willing to come to Serbia to work with autistic kids? Yes. Would he like to come to Tel Aviv to choreograph “The Producers”? Absolutely. How about spending a few weeks at Trinity University as part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series, directing and choreographing a student production of “Pippin”? Why not?

The musical, which follows a young man's quest for fulfillment, opens Friday at Trinity.

Directing and choreographing weren't the only tasks Walker fulfilled during his stay here. He also gave a lecture about his career, and saying yes to things was the big take-away from it.

“I told them how (whether) you're coming up, you're coming down, you just don't know where you're going to be,” said Walker, 59. “So you kind of have to be open to anything.”

Saying yes has worked out pretty well for Walker. He started dancing on Broadway when he was a teenager; the original run of “Pippin” was his second professional credit. Most recently, he choreographed the circus-themed revival of “Pippin” on Broadway, a big-buzz show for which he received a Tony nomination and a slew of other awards. (His favorite is the Fred and Adele Astaire Award for Choreography “because that's why you do the things you do, is because of that man.”)

His decision to come to Trinity while “Pippin” is still wowing crowds on Broadway owes something to serendipity. The university's theater department had lined up someone else as part of the Stieren series this fall; when that deal fell apart in May, there was some scrambling to find a replacement.

The Haunted House Mostellaria Plautus Thomas E. Jenkins Overtime Theatre San Antonio TX

Hijinx and horror combine in this fresh adaptation of Plautus' Mostellaria (The Haunted House). Nominated for several Antonius awards in 190 BCE--including best Middle Republic comedy, and Most Promising Debut by an Umbrian Playwright--The Haunted House has received surprisingly few modern productions, probably owing to the death of Latin. But have no fear: Thomas E. Jenkins' moronic new translation precisely captures the idiocy of the original farce, which scrambles masters and slaves, prostitutes and poltergeists on a particularly hectic day in suburban Rome. So head over to the Overtime Theater to catch this local premiere of Plautus' gloriously goofy Mostellaria: it's the best little horror house in Texas.

"Ubertim flevi et copiose risi -- iterumque iterumque spectare volo! Hoc spectaculum melius Felibus est! Quattuor stellae!" -- Gaius Junius Marcellus, The Greater Tuscany Examiner

"Tragedy, then, is an imitation (mimesis) of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude. The Haunted House, by contrast, is complete garbage." -- Aristotle, Poetics 267E.

(*) THE CRAZY LOCOMOTIVE by Stanislaw Witkiewicz, Trinity University, April 12 - 20, 2013

Trinity University Theatre San Antonio TX

presents

The Crazy Locomotive

by Stanislaw Witkiewicz

Directed by Kyle Gillette

Stanislaw Witkiewicz's 1923 play The Crazy Locomotive both parodies and embodies the artistic movement of futurism as well as Einstein's theory of relativity and the melodramatic conventions of silent film. Set aboard the engine room of a train hurtling toward its destruction, the play features a projected cinematic backdrop of the landscape hurtling by and the large frightening machinery of industrial modernity. As two international criminal masterminds hijack the train, they ponder the meaning of space, time, and modern art, all while driving the train toward unprecedented speeds and losing their minds in the process. Provocative, absurd, and hilarious, Witkiewicz's play asks big questions about the progress of industrial civilization and the fatal course of history.

(*) Upcoming: Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, Trinity University, San Antonio, February 15 - 23

Trinity University Theatre San Antonio TX

Arcadia

by Tom Stoppard
In 1809, on an idyllic country estate in Derbyshire, England, a 13-year-old genius and her tutor are about to make history with a brilliant mathematical proof, now lost to history. In the same location, two hundred years later, rival authors-a popular historian and a self-promoting academic-are in a mad, lusty, and hilarious race to uncover that secret. The characters' quests become an obsessive intellectual scavenger hunt, leading to sexual intrigue, shocking discoveries, absurd conclusions, and mortifying misadventures that span and blend both eras. Such is the glorious, topsy-turvy world of Arcadia, described by critics as Tom Stoppard's masterwork.

HELL CAB by Will Kern

Directed by Stacey Connelly

Production design by Andrea Caillouet

May 16-June 2, 2013 Thursday, Friday and Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 2:30pm
Hellcab is a seventy-minute joy ride created through a collection of scenes from a day in the life of a Chicago cabbie. Director Stacey Connelly, playwright Will Kern and visual artist Andrea Caillouet bring a cabbie’s long day’s journey to life. Fares from a dangerous trio of druggies, a piggish mini-capitalist, a benumbed rape victim, a drunken woman on welfare, and a randy couple on the way to a motel are alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant. These sharply etched blackouts and cameos are capped by a stunning and very touching final scene.
