Announcing a new musical for the 2011 -2012 Season!

Chess, musical, Tim Rice, Austin Playhouse, TX

music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (formerly of ABBA), book and lyrics by Tim Rice (lyricist for Evita)

July 6 - 22

Austin Playhouse temporary facility, 1801 1/2 Simond Street (click for map)

Dear friends,

We recently received permission from the city to stay in our temporary facility a little longer to finish out our season. At the same time we are delighted to announce that we've signed on to take over from Zilker Productions as the sponsor of SummerStock Austin.

SummerStock Austin is an incredible program for high school and college performers that provides continued theatre education for all students of the greater Austin area, no matter the economic situation of the participant. One of the productions SummerStock has planned this year is the Austin Premiere of the Tim Rice (Evita) musica, Chess. It's a powerful show and we've decided to close out our season with a co-production of Chess with SummerStock.

We feel this is an incredible opportunity to celebrate this new collaboration and close out our season with an amazing musical! We still believe that Man of La Mancha is the perfect production to open our new theatre. We are moving it from the closing production of our 2011 - 2012 Season to the opening production of our 2012 - 2013 Season.

So, Chess will run for three weeks this Summer at our temporary facility and then transfer to the Long Center with an expanded chorus for its two-week SummerStock run. Subscribers may make reservations for Chess now. Single tickets will go on sale in June. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at 476-0084.

Auditions for Tigers Be Still and for Middletown, Hyde Park Theatre, April 7

Hyde Park Theatre AUstin TXHyde Park Theatre will Tigers Be Still by Kim Rosenstock (image: www.citytheatrecompany.org)hold auditions for Tigers Be Still by Kim Rosenstock (June-July) and Middletown by Will Eno on Saturday April 7. For more information, or to set up an appointment email Ken Webster at hydeparktheatre@gmail.com

From City Theatre, Pittsburgh, where Tigers Be Still is about to open: "Depression has never been funnier! Sherry’s art therapy degree didn’t launch her dream career, so she moved back into her childhood bedroom. Her mom won’t come downstairs. Her sister won’t leave the couch. Her very first patient won’t stick around for a session. Her boss brings a rifle to work. And an escaped tiger roams the streets … but Sherry’s life is looking up. Variety commends Rosenstock’s “clever comic dialogue in a voice that is too smart to be cute.”

Middletown Will Eno (image: coolcleveland.com)From coolcleveland.com: "Middletown is Will Eno’s deeply moving and funny new play exploring the universe of a small American town. Mary Swanson just moved to Middletown, eager to start a family and enjoy the neighborly bonds a small town promises. But when Mary befriends resident John Dodge, she is quick to discover that below Middletown’s unflinchingly honest exterior lies something much more complex. Middletown is a wry, human portrait of a town with two lives, one ordinary and visible, the other epic and mysterious."

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

present Federico Garcia Lorca's

Blood Wedding

directed by Michael Floyd

September 8 - 18, Thursdays through Sundays at 8 p.m.

Community Renaissance Market Theatre, 6800 Westgate at William Cannon (click for map)

The Wondrous Strange Players are proud to announce the opening of their newest production, Federico Garcia Lorca’s BLOOD WEDDING. Written in 1932, the play was based upon newspaper clippings that Lorca had saved for a number of years before he began work on the piece. The play was strongly influenced by the political climate in Spain at the time. The work reflects the attitudes and beliefs of the working class in the years just prior to the Spanish Civil War.

The story of BLOOD WEDDING concerns a young engaged couple approaching their wedding day. As the day comes closer, the Bride (Cameron Holmes) begins to realize she is still passionately drawn to her ex-lover, Leonardo (Austen Simien). Complicating the matter is the fact that Leonardo’s family was implicated in the deaths of The Groom’s father and brother. The Bride must choose between the Groom (Steven Brandt), who can provide wealth and security, and her heart’s desire, Leonardo. The choices the young lovers make lead to a deadly confrontation in the woods, spurred on by the involvement of The Moon (Sabrina Tarbutton) and a mysterious Beggar (Casey Allen).

Featuring a cast of both seasoned actors and newcomers, this updated version of the poetic classic is sure to be remembered. The cast includes company members Steven Brandt, Sabrina Tarbutton, Casey Allen and Christl Climans. Newcomers to the company include Cameron Holmes, Austen Simien, Terrie Cooper, Dustin Beyer, Kat Eason, Mike Dellens, Thomas Epling and Anne Gomez-Guzman. The production is directed by Wondrous Strange company member Michael Floyd (Chaotic Theatre’s Lysistrata and A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Sound Design and original music was composed by Taylor Kirk. The production is stage managed by Jessie Robles.

Tickets are on sale now. More information can be found at www.bloodwedding.weebly.com. Showdates are September 8-11 and September 15-18 at the Wondrous Strange Theatre inside The Community Renaissance Market located at 6800 Westgate Blvd. Austin, TX 78745. Doors open at 7:30pm and show starts at 8pm. This production contains mature themes and mild violence and is suitable for audience members ages 13 and up.

Upcoming: Barrio Daze by Adrian Villegas, New Movement Theatre,September 2 and 3

Received directly:

Adrian Villegas presents his one-man comedyBarrio Daze by Adrian Villegas

Barrio Daze

a laugh-out-loud-funny comedy about inner-city lives during a fateful day in the barrio

ONE WEEKEND ONLY!
Friday and Saturday, September 2nd and 3rd at 8 p.m.
at the New Movement Theater, 1819 Rosewood Ave (click for map)
$8 general admission, available at the box office on performance evenings

Adrian Villegas, atistic director for the award-winning Latino Comedy Project, returns with his one-man comedy Barrio Daze. Set against the backdrop of a fictional national election, Barrio Daze is a sprawling and irreverent one-man tour through a single day in the barrio. In a hilarious God's-eye-view of barrio life, Villegas brings to life a vivid gallery of unforgettable characters ranging from a hopeless panhandling borrachón (drunk) to an unlikely Chicano U.S. Senate hopeful.

Other members of his rich gallery of characters include a clueless burger-flipping high-school drop-out; a noble, hard-working illegal immigrant; and a culturally conflicted Hispanic "coconut" (brown on the outside, white on the inside) working for a prominent right-wing politician. On a single fateful election day, the diverse lives oft he nine characters overlap and collide in meaningful and surprising ways. The day culminates with the outcome of a heated senatorial race between a well-funded, rabidly conservative good-'ol boy politician and the inspiring grass-roots campaign of a dirt-poor Chicano school teacher.

Using a tapestry of slide photography, original audio parodies and stage monologues, Barrio Daze deftly mixes uproarious cultural humor with pointed social commentary to create a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud and unforgettably funny portrait of contemporary Latino life.

The Austin Chronicle wrote, "Performed with nothing less than brilliance…'Barrio Daze' is both absurdly funny and dead-on insightful…A series of damn funny and poignant sketches…This is laugh-out-loud material. Adrian Villegas is truly a gem.” The Dallas Morning News wrote, “’Barrio Daze’ is a free-for-all of social satire and wicked self-mockery. The only answer is helpless laughter. Mr. Villegas’ gift is in making we, the different people, laugh together.” Meanwhile, the Statesman's XL Ent. Weekly commented that Villegas' work "rivals the [one-man] shows John Leguizamo has done".

Villegas' rollicking one-man shows deal with barrio life, racial politics, and pop culture, and have played to packed audiences and critical acclaim at colleges, theatres and cultural arts venues across the country. In addition to his solo work, Villegas is also the artistic director for The Latino Comedy Project (L.C.P.), a popular, award-winning sketch comedy troupe. To date, the LCP’s YouTube comedy videos have received over twelve million views worldwide. The LCP cast also co-wrote and were featured in an MTV3 comedy ad campaign, which was nominated for a 2009 Emmy Award.

As both a touring solo performer and artistic director for the Latino Comedy Project, Villegas strives to create work that entertains, bridges cultures, and taps into the hunger of under-served Latino audiences.

“Barrio Daze” will run one weekend only Friday and Saturday, September 2nd and 3rd at 8pm at The New Movement Theater, 1819 Rosewood Ave, Austin, Texas 78722. Tickets are $8 general admission, available at the box office on performance evenings.

Directed and choreographed for ACT by Adam Roberts, Godspell Jr. is an especially exciting project for the ACT family: our first-ever production of a mainstream musical! The original 1971 off-Broadway production took New York by storm with music by the composer/lyricist of Wicked, Stephen Schwartz.

We're thrilled to bring to life onstage an all-important message of love, respect, kindness and humanity through this version of the musical, designed especially for performance by kids! There are 18 youth performers in this production that are sure to dazzle you and have you clapping along in no time! Don't miss out on the fantastic musical! Performances are one weekend only!
