From books.google.com:  Characters: 2 male, 5 female.  Winner of the 2003 National Latino Playwriting Award.  A dark work about self-knowledge and the nature of evil, where the devil lives in a godless world. Lee, accompanied by his photographer girlfriend Dru, arrives in El Paso to interview Mateo, (a convicted murderer recently released), over a period of a few days. During the intense interview process, Lee so empathizes with his subject's life in the past that he merges his own past with it in order to reenact it. The bloody conclusion draws upon the dangers of defining the nature of evil.

The Flu Season reminds us of the coldest times of in lives

Proxy Theatre continues its successful second season with The Flu Season, written by award-winning contemporary playwright Will Eno. Although the play will be opening in the Texas heat of May, the inhabitants of a psychiatric rehab are going through the winter of their lives. But love happens no matter the season.

The Flu Season will remind of you of the warmest and coldest times in your life. "The Flu Season takes place in both a hospital and a theater," said Aguilar, "It's a play about the love we feel for the art we create and for another person...and it's about how easy it is to screw up that love. We nurture, we toil, we invest, and yet somehow it still goes up in flames. And so what? We're not perfect. The Flu Season is an exciting new kind of theatre by Will Eno; it's certainly experimental, but like all his work it is still so tenderly, so passionately human."

Written in 2003, The Flu Season is the winner of the 2004 Oppenheimer Award for best New York debut by an American playwright. Focusing on the narratives of a Man and Woman and their Doctor and Nurse, this play is a love story for today-- one that doesn't necessarily end well. Through Prologue and Epilogue the audience is enabled to view the hopeful beginnings and jaded hindsight of the writer, framing the characters in both the present and future.

Runs May 16th-June 1st at 8 pm at The Overtime Theater. Shows are Thursday-Saturday at 8pm. Tickets go on sale May 2nd. All events take place at the Overtime Theater at 1203 Camden St, SATX 78215. Free parking can be found on site.

Auditions for The Flu Season, Saturday, March 16, 2013, 12:00pm until 3:00pm
This production is the third of Proxy's second season, The Leper Colony, a season concerning those who society has labeled dangerously contagious or generally unwanted. It will be directed by Artistic Director, Aaron Aguilar, director of Red Light Winter, End Days, and most recently, Mike Greenberg's short play, Max & Maggie, as part of Northwest Vista's Black Boxer Shorts.
Will Eno's The Flu Season is the beautiful tale of two psych ward patients who want to love each other, but struggle to figure out how. Plus the story of their doctor and a nurse who in turn harbor love for each other. Plus two narrators, Prologue and Epilogue, who try their best to objective storytellers. The language of the play is richly poetic, each character is filled with complex emotion and desire, and there are no minor roles.


ABOUT THE AUDITIONS:
-Preliminary auditions will be held Saturday, March 16th from 12pm-3pm.
-Please prepare one or two 90 second (only!) monologues. Contemporary monologues preferred.
-Although we'll accept walk-ins, we highly suggest emailing aaron@proxytheatre.org to make an appoitment!

Waiting for Lefty, a Clifford Odets 1935 play, begins with several taxi drivers meeting to convince their union leader Harry Fatt to let them strike. The meeting is interrupted with vignettes showing each driver’s personal reasons for wanting to strike. Originally intended to be an agitprop play put on by the Group Theatre, Waiting for Lefty shows all the hardships and struggles of the American worker in the 1930s and points out the flaws in capitalism’s American Dream (some of which still exist today). End Days is about the end; of the world, that is. “I think Deborah Zoe Laufer has found a great paradox about living in the new millennium; the advance of technology and science makes this world extremely wondrous and terrifying at the same time. It’s funny because after 150 years, we’re still wondering: is this the best of times or the worst? Either way, this time, it’s a little funnier. Sorry Mr. Dickens.” said Director Aaron Aguilar. The play is the opening production of Proxy’s second season, and is sure to be popular with an audience as it is “…both poignantly redemptive and often hilariously funny,” according to the Huffington Post. With Proxy’s production, End Days, which won the 2008American Theatre Critics Association Steinberg Citation, will finally have a San Antonio premiere.
End Days by Deborah Zoe Laufer premiered in 2008, seven years after the attacks of 9/11—the event that breaks the Stein family. The father, Arthur, doesn’t do much of anything anymore, while Lisa, the mom, has developed a close, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. With her parents effectively abandoning her, it’s no wonder that Rachel Stein rebels by wearing all black, painting her face white and railing against her parents. Add the new kid across the street proclaiming his love for her, and it’s easy to see why Rachel is miserable. The only thing that could make things worse is if Jesus told her mom that the world is going to end on Wednesday.

End Days is a fun, quirky comedy about love, religion, living in the now, and, you know, the end of the world. Sixteen-year-old Rachel Stein is having a bad year. Her father hasn't changed out of his pajamas since 9/11. Her mother has begun a close, personal relationship with Jesus. Her new neighbor, a sixteen-year-old Elvis impersonator, has fallen for her hard. And the Apocalypse is coming Wednesday. Her only hope is that Stephen Hawking will save them all. (SamuelFrench.com)

Bent, by revered playwright Martin Sherman, directed by Chelsea Taylor, highlights an often forgotten element of the Holocaust—the persecution of homosexuals. “After watching a documentary about the Westboro Baptist Church, I noticed the use of pink triangles in their posters to protest against certain celebrities. I knew what it meant because of Sherman’s play, and I felt that everyone should know that this symbol is still being used to try to oppress people—and how horrible that is” said Director Chelsea Taylor. 

The play is the final production of Proxy’s first six-show season, and promises to have great impact on the audience: ”Bent is a play that’s both horrifying and illuminating. It’s about the worst that man can do and the very best. How often do you get a story of that magnitude?” said Artistic Director Aaron Aguilar.

Bent by Martin Sherman premiered in The Royal Court Theatre in London in 1979. “In 1934 Berlin on the eve of the Nazi incursion, two soldiers burst into the apartment of Max and his lover, Rudy, and slit their guest’s throat, beginning a nightmare odyssey through Nazi Germany. Ranked lower on the human scale than Jews, the men, as avowed homosexuals, flee” (Samuel French). The play darts from a seedy club to a forest encampment to a concentration camp as the men struggle to stay alive and keep their humanity in one of the darkest hours of human history. With touches of cabaret, non-realism and heartbreaking tragedy, Bent continues to captivate audiences since its inception, despite the measure of time and distance between 1934 Germany and 2012 San Antonio.

In 1934 Berlin on the eve of the Nazi incursion, Max, a grifter and his lover Rudy are recovering from a night of debauchery with a SA trooper. Two soldiers burst into the apartment and slit their guest's throat, beginning a nightmare odyssey through Nazi Germany. Ranked lower on the human scale than Jews, the men as avowed homosexuals, flee. Desperate and on the run, Max asks his own "discreetly" homosexual Uncle Freddie for help as the older man offers little more than suggestions on how to live, as he does, practicing homosexuality on the side. Attempting their escape, Rudy is beaten to death as Horst, another homosexual prisoner, warns Max to deny his lover. Taken to a death camp at Dachau, Max and Horst branded with the "pink triangle", hope to survive with each other for comfort and courage but it is not to be.
