Hellcab is a eighty-minute joy ride created through a collection of scenes from a day in the life of a Chicago cabbie. Director Stacey Connelly, playwright Will Kern and visual artist Andrea Caillouet bring a cabbie’s long day’s journey to life. Fares from a dangerous trio of druggies, a piggish mini-capitalist, a benumbed rape victim, a drunken woman on welfare, and a randy couple on the way to a motel are alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant. These sharply etched blackouts and cameos are capped by a stunning and very touching final scene.

Auditions in San Antonio for Hellcab by Will Kern, Attic Rep at Trinity University, March 22 and 23, 2013

HELLCAB AUDITIONS

AtticRep is holding auditions for HELLCAB, Will Kern’s long-running comedy, capturing one day in the life of a hapless cab driver working the mean streets of Chicago. 

We’re looking for four men and three women between the ages of 20 and 50 to play a racially and ethnically diverse range of characters (white, Hispanic, Asian, African-American, middle-eastern); for our cast, we’re specifically seeking an African-American male and female, and a Hispanic male and female. HELLCAB is for mature audiences, featuring strong language and adult situations. Be prepared for cold readings. Monologues are optional

Auditions are at Trinity University’s Attic Theatre, Ruth Taylor Theatre Building, One Trinity Place, San Antonio (click for map) on Friday, March 22, from 7-10 pm and Saturday, March 23, from 1-4 pm. Callbacks will be Sunday, March 24, from 1-4 pm

Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema, San Antonio is AtticRep @ the Pearl

The Rep continues to explore the relationship between performance and media with the third annual Sans Souci Festival, an international film festival showcasing the art of dance and performance. This exciting and unique partnership brings international short films to San Antonio, pairing local live video performance with work by artists from around the world, exposing our audiences to a variety of film, video, and performance possibilities continuing the dialogue of what theatre can be. Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema started in Boulder Colorado in 2003. Choreographer and filmmaker, Anna Baer-Carrillo initiated collaboration and a partnership with the Rep in 2011. This year we are taking it to The Pearl.

Martha announces that she has invited a young couple to stop by for a nightcap. When they arrive the charade begins. The drinks flow and suddenly inhibitions melt. It becomes clear that Martha is determined to seduce the young professor, and George couldn’t care less. But underneath the edgy banter, lurks an undercurrent of secrets and despair that is the foundation for their relationship. Winner of the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play. The Broadway production of this play was a shattering and memorable experience and proclaimed the author as a major American playwright.

Proxy Theatre Company, formed by recent Trinity University graduates, under the mentorship of the AtticRep, will burst onto the San Antonio theatre scene with a striking contemporary story of love. Adam Rapp’s Red Light Winter explores a twisted triangle of unrequited love, lust, and intrigue that arises between two former college roommates and a mysterious French prostitute in Amsterdam.

Proxy Theatre’s Artistic Director and director of Red Light Winter, Aaron Aguilar, chose the play because it offers San Antonio audiences “a stunning glimpse at the character’s lives, at our lives. Because we’ve all been there, we have that friend, we’ve met that person that we weren’t meant to fall in love with, but do anyway. These characters can teach us about ourselves in such a funny and heartbreaking way…this play stays with you.” Expressive and haunting, Red Light Winter delivers a story about the relationships and passions that control our lives.

This allegedly Irish trait is the focus of their weekly whining and bitching as they feel this “shortcoming” has ruined their lives. One evening, when a twenty-something blue-collar guy joins the group, he challenges everything the other men thought about “the Irish curse” …tackling their obsession with body image and unmasking the comical and truthful questions of identity, masculinity, sex, relationships, and social status that define their lives.
