(*)Deobrah Martin Reports: Storm Damage at Playhouse San Antonio Forces Friday Cancellation, San Antonio Express-News

Report by Deborah Martin on her arts blog at the San Antonio Express-News:

San Antonio Express-News TX

Storm damage claims another ‘Spring Awakening’ performance

Posted on 05/29/2013 by Deborah Martin

Days after last weekend’s storm, the Playhouse is still drying out and coping with the damage. It has also had to cancel a third performance of “Spring Awakening.”

The storm sent chunks of plaster from the ceiling plummeting to the seats in the Russell Hill Rogers theater upstairs sometime late Friday or early Saturday (May 24 or 25), said Playhouse CEO and President Asia Ciaravino.

“The plaster that’s on the ceiling has been saturated with water,” Ciaravino said. “When that plaster is wet, it dissolves. ”

Chunks of plaster fell onto seats in the Russell Hill Rogers theater at the Playhouse. Photo courtesy of Asia Ciaravino

There was also standing water in the theater. And so, every piece of electrical equipment in the space — and it’s a lot of stuff, given that “Spring Awakening” is a high-tech show — had to be unplugged and stashed in the lobby. That included everything in the orchestra pit.

“We had a structural engineer come in from the city — we had a lot of people come today (May 29) to assess it. And we are structurally sound,” Ciaravino said.

But it will take a few more days to dry out the space, clean everything up and re-install all of that equipment, she said. And she doesn’t expect to get the “all clear” from the city until sometime Friday afternoon.

And so, Friday’s (May 31) performance had to be cancelled. Instead, once the theater gets the OK that the space is useable, the cast, crew and musicians will use that night as a rehearsal. They will have been away from the show for a week — all but one of last weekend’s shows were cancelled due to the storm damage. They’ll also use that time to make sure that all of the tech equipment is ship-shape.

“The city (which owns the building) is going to be working on funding the repairs for this, which we are so grateful for,” Ciaravino said.

The situation does illustrate the need for an endowment fund to cover maintenance for the building, she said.

“This is an old building; there’s always going to be a need for repairs,” she said. “Lets say the air conditioning goes out. We don’t have the reserve that we need to be able to pay for those things.

“It’s constantly a struggle. But it’s worth it.”

The theater is creating a fund — called (what else?) Can’t Rain on Our Parade — to help offset costs of the storm damage, including clean-up. Information will be posted on the Playhouse Web site.

Red Dragon Players of Austin High present landmark production

[Spring Awakening, School Edition, December 9 - 11, 30-31]

by Michael CorcoranAustin High School, Austin TX

When Billy Dragoo was hired to replace his retiring mentor Larry Preas as head of the theater department at Austin High School in 1993, he noticed one difference there than at other Texas high schools he had worked at or visited. “At Austin High, it’s cool to be a theater kid,” he said. "It's a welcoming environment, not a closed shop."

You won’t hear taunts of “drama queens” or “theater sissies” at Austin High, where the rich stage tradition is a source of Maroon pride.

The AHS Red Dragon Players, whose alumni includes actor Zachary Scott (Mildred Pierce), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan (The Kentucky Cycle) and Emmy-winning actress Valerie Mahaffey (Northern Exposure), is one of the nation’s oldest continuously active drama troupes west of the Mississippi.

While the school’s football team has not won a playoff game since 1957, the theater department has won three state championships (two in the past three years), in the UIL one-act play competition. The reputation goes beyond the state, as theater companies in New York City often look to Austin High to test-stage musicals that have been adapted for high school theater.

Spring Awakening, Zach Theatre, September 20 - November 13

Spring Awakening (photo: Kirk R. Tuck)

by Hanna Bisewski and Michael Meigs

Spring Awakening won eight of the 2007 Tony awards, including that for best musical, and the powerful production opened by the Zach Theatre last Saturday shows you why. This very contemporary musical adaptation of Franz Wedekind's Spring Awakening has played across Europe, and the U.S. national touring company fielded by Broadway Across America visited Bass Hall for a week in October, 2009. Awakening has now settled in to the Wisenhut Stage until November 13 playing an extended Tuesday to Sunday schedule. Zach management clearly expects this one to resound with the Austin public.

Sara Burke Spring Awakening (image: Kirk R. Tuck)

The time is the late 19th century and the place is a quietly repressed, sinister bourgeois community in rural Germany. The story is one that encompasses child abuse, sexual ignorance, adolescent suicide and a hushed-up death, all orbiting themes of the sexual awakening of children aged around thirteen. The Zach's production, true to the script and the music, takes these matters head-on, each actor approaching his character's criminal sexuality with a child-like shamelessness and a believable innocence.

The show is not for the faint of heart, and certainly not for those offended by stage depictions of sex. Can you laugh at a young man avidly masturbating on the toilet while reading a penny-dreadful novel? What would you think of some adolescent sado-masochism with a switch? An intense, angry song by two girls about fathers who fondle them at bedtime or even do more? The first act ends with the tense, lengthy, very hot and fully suggestive seduction of sweet innocent Wendla by her smart, troubled friend Melchior, staged in profile on a high platform as a grim Lutheran pastor preaches below them to the robed choir.

Tony Award-winning rock musical Spring Awakening follows a group of late nineteenth-century German adolescents on the road to adulthood as they squirm out of school uniforms and discover their own mysterious, throbbing sexuality. As sweetly naĂŻve Wendla wonders where babies come from, her angst-riddled male counterparts, Melchior and Moritz, deal with their erotic dreams and the “bitch of living.” But when these rebellious teens begin acting on their desires, they quickly spiral into an all-too-adult world in which suicide, abortion, rape, and child abuse dominate. Will Melchior find salvation and hope for the future? Don’t miss this dark and impassioned musical.

Reviews from Elsewhere: Letter to the Editor, Austin Statesman, November 15

Published in today's Austin Statesman:

A little more modesty

I attended a recent production of Spring Awakening at Bass Concert Hall . There was some good music and a touching love story, but the experience was spoiled for me by the explicit scenes of masturbation and sexual intercourse.

I believe if people behaved this way at Zilker Park on a Sunday afternoon, they would be arrested for public lewdness.

I have stopped going to Zachary Scott Theatre because of scenes such as a man urinating against a wall and an entire play featuring nude baseball players. Maybe I am out of step with the times if this is acceptable.

Thank goodness for Austin Playhouse, where you can still see a good play and excellent acting and where the actors keep their clothes on.

Cindy Brandt

Austin

Notes from AustinLiveTheatre:

The Spring Awakening national touring company was booked at Bass Concert Hall by the UT Performing Arts Center, October 20 - 25. The company's PR firm offered free tickets for the opening to AustinLiveTheatre. ALT declined. ALT's focus is theatre produced in and around Austin by companies and groups established here.

Zach Theatre's next offerings are their popular perennial productions of Rockin' Christmas Party and David Sedaris' Santaland Diaries, both opening on November 27. The naked baseball players must have been onstage before I arrived in Austin.

Austin Playhouse is opening Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap on November 20, running until December 20.
