True West by Sam Shepard, Weird Rodeo at the Off Center, January 9 - 25, 2014

CTXLT review

by Dr. David Glen Robinson

The question one could ask is why a brand-new theatre company would challenge a play as complex and difficult as Sam Shepard’s True West for its premier production. And the question contains the answer—because it is a challenge, and all who see it can measure the company’s skill in their upward progress climbing the monument. That's the first reason to shout “Bravo!” at this show, one of the few.

Weird Rodeo wisely short-circuits some of the difficulties by assembling a highly talented cast and crew. The first stand-out is David Boss as Lee. He is superbly costumed and styled by Lindsay McKenna for his role, and he's an actor who has shown us he can easily learn and spout thousands of lines while physically stomping through any number of flaming sets. His role clearly drives the dialogues and action of the play, and Boss is easily capable of doing this in True West. But here is a note for director Jerry Fugit: Boss and all the actors need clear pause points for reactions and heightened intensity. Boss can fire daggers and poniards from his eyes, but he needs a few more opportunities in this play to do so. It’s not all machine-gun mouth and phone cords. The weaponry metaphors are apt.

Bob Jones as the movie producer Saul Kimmer matches his subtlety to Boss’s power. Lee addresses Saul with the predatory look of a coyote eyeing a rabbit. But Saul’s instincts are those of a rattlesnake, not a rabbit, and he correctly sees the brothers Austin (Chris Hejl) and Lee for who and what they are. Saul slithers through the story with complete control, a fact we notice only later. Bob Jones does excellent work, making his reactions and taking his silences as needed to flesh out his character.

The story of True West is well known: after years of separation family members come back together with the intensity of hypergolic solid rocket fuel, a trope perhaps invented by Sam Shepard. The biblical Prodigal Son parable it ain’t. The father is absent, said by Saul to be “destitute” which the entire audience takes to mean “insane.” Dad fled to the Desert, and here we see the first layerings of meaning on Shepard’s conception of Desert. The meanings Shepard gives it are largely chthonic, steeped in desolation and darkness. Mom (Bobbie Oliver) is in the Far North touring Alaska, a desert of another sort. The criminal but romantic seeker Lee sees the Desert as a refuge from authority and control, while Austin, educated and tame, fears it. Between scenes coyote voices on the soundtrack howl songs of death.

The Desert underlies the more surficial titular theme of the West. And here's where Weird Rodeo succeeds in the task it set for itself. We see clearly the distinction between brother Austin’s real West (freeways, palm trees and golf courses) and Lee’s unstated but described True West. All is made plain by Lee’s verbal homage to Kirk Douglas as the last cowboy on earth in the movie Lonely Are the Brave. Lee would have given his life to have worked in that film in any capacity, but Austin, the Ivy League screenwriter, has never seen the movie. The production ultimately accomplishes its theatrical and literary goals by making the West distinctions clear and dealing with their implications.

True West examines the relationship between Austin, a screenwriter, and his older brother Lee. It is set in the kitchen of their mother's home. Austin is housesitting while their mother is in Alaska, and there he is confronted by his brother, who proceeds to bully his way into staying at the house and using Austin's car. In addition, the screenplay which Austin is pitching to his connection in Hollywood somehow gets taken over by the pushy con-man tactics of Lee, and the brothers find themselves forced to cooperate in the creation of a story that will make or break both their lives. In the process, the conflict between the brothers creates a heated situation in which their roles as successful family man and nomadic drifter are somehow reversed, and each man finds himself admitting that he had somehow always wished he were in the other's shoes.

Starring: Austin Amelio, Juston Street, Michael Davis, & Jacqueline Lies.

A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard, Mary Moody Northen Theatre, St. Edward's University, November 10 - 20

A Lie of the Mind, Sam Shepard, Mary Moody Northen Theatre Austin TX

by Michael Meigs

Sam Shepard wrote and directed A Lie of The Mind off Broadway in 1985. It won awards as best play then and the 2010 New York production won the Lucille Lortel award as best revival.

Musing over the claustrophobic evening with these characters, I recalled Harry Allard's picture book collaboration with James Marshall in the 1970's featuring a charmingly inept cartoon family named The Stupids. A Lie of the Mind is a hard evening with a bunch of no-hopers who might just be hybrids of The Stupids and The Nastys -- Deliverance-style degenerates, except that they're out somewhere in the great American West.

Jake has beaten his wife Beth senseless and believes that he killed her. His brother Frankie leaves the gibbering Jake in the custody of their steel-hearted mother Lorraine and travels to the remote ranch owned by Beth's stupid-nasty parents Baylor and Meg and Beth's stupid-nasty-protective brother Mike. It's the last day of the deer season and daddy Baylor sees a shape sneaking through the woods, so he shoots it. Or rather, him, since it's Frankie, trying to get to the house to make sure that beaten Beth is still alive.

Jake has brutally beaten his wife Beth and left her for dead. Her brain damage is significant. His guilt is crippling. Jake’s brother, Frankie, searches for the truth of Beth’s condition, while Jake’s father haunts him from the urn beneath his childhood bed.

A Lie of the Mind is both a chilling indictment of true love and an affirmation of its abiding ties. Capital T is proud to present this gritty, darkly humorous American drama by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Sam Shepard.

Jake’s wife who has been brutally beaten by her husband. She is recovering from brain injury, her speech is sometimes nonsensical and slurred. This role requires brief topless nudity

Jake’s sister. Mistaken by Jake as Beth at first, she quickly becomes Jake’s only ally in their dysfunctional home.

Mike – 25-40 Years old male
Beth’s brother. Caretaker of Beth during her recovery.

Lorraine 55-70 Years old female
Jake’s Mother. She is more concerned with Jake’s well being than the crime he has committed. Seems to treat her grown son like a child while he recovers from the traumatic incident.

This darkly comic tale of a Midwestern family with a terrible secret achieved national recognition as an instant classic, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 and garnering outstanding critical acclaim.

Like many of Shepard's plays, Buried Child is characterized by a poetic sensibility and offbeat sense of humor, as well as startling imagery that conjures up the decline of the great American West. This production will run from February 4 – 21.

Upcoming: Buried Child by Sam Shepard, Southwestern University, April 22 - 26

UPDATE: Click for ALT review

From the website of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Southwestern University, Georgetown:

Buried Child
by Sam Shepard
Directed by Jared J. Stein
April 22–26, 2009
Southwestern University

Winner of the 1979 Pulitzer Prize, this powerful and brilliant play probes deep into the disintegration of the American Dream. A bizarre and explosive family reunion takes place unexpectedly when a prodigal grandson returns to his estranged family’s Illinois farm. At first recognized by neither his grandparents nor his own father, he soon realizes this homecoming has unearthed an unwanted family inheritance, rather than the idealized mid-western roots he hoped to find. Sometimes humorous, often monstrous, the play’s roots in ritual and its approach to monumental, timeless themes of human suffering—incest, murder, deceit and rebirth—resemble the destruction wreaked by the heroes of Greek Tragedy.
