Todd Essary directs the award winning comedy about a confused middle-aged guy who goes on a road trip with hopes of finding meaning to his life.

The cast includes HCCT regulars Freddie Bonetti of Round Rock as Charlie; Brian Hicks of Marble Falls as Wally; Becky Barton of Marble Falls as Nell, Guy Gober of Marble Falls as Travis and Laura Braden of Marble Falls as Kiki. The production team includes Todd Essary of Austin, Director, Jon Harshaw of Horseshoe Bay, Scenic and Lighting Designer, and Steve Reily of Meadowlakes, Sound Design.

“This play is truly unique, and so well written that it’s practically impossible for it not to be entertaining”, said director Todd Essary. “From day one, we’ve found ourselves laughing our way through rehearsals. We’re also repeatedly being struck by the thoughtful, touching moments of truth the play offers. The depth, richness and broad scope of this play makes it accessible to any audience. I think it’s inevitable that everyone who sees ‘Charlie Cox’ will be compelled to reflect on it and talk about it.”

Awards and recognition have been overwhelming for Charlie Cox since it was first produced in 2003. The play was awarded the 2004 Carbonell Award and the 2003 Curtains Up Award for Best New Work. It was also named one of the "10 Best Plays of the Year" in 2003 by the Sun-Sentinel. The play has also been met with rave reviews from several major theatre critics. Christine Dolen of the Miami Herald called Michael McKeever’s play, "A joyous, uplifting work from a playwright who gets better with every story he tells." Jack Zink of the Sun-Sentinel remarked that Charlie Cox was, "A poignant treatise on life and love."

Todd Essary has been involved in theatre since 1998, beginning his career at Zachary Scott and the Vortex Theatre in Austin. He has studied with a number of prominent teachers, as well as acted and directed in productions ranging from the Classics to original and experimental works, in both Austin and New York City.

The Hill Country Community Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for their fourth production of the 2012-2013 season, Charlie Cox Runs with Scissors by Michael McKeever,  February 18 and 19, 2013, 7:00 p.m. at the Hill Country Community Theatre in Marble Falls/Cottonwood Shores (4003 FM 2147 West - click for map).

Todd Essary directs the quirky comedy about a middle-aged guy named Charlie, who’s never been in love and never taken a risk. When he is faced with one big unexpected problem, he hits the road, hoping to find some meaning in his life. At a broken-down motel in the middle of nowhere, Charlie thinks he has found the answer. With warmth, humor and humanity this award-winning play proves it is never too late to start living.

The Hill Country Community Theatre in Cottonwood Shores near Marble Falls, TX, is looking for a part-time employee to work as a stage technician in support of theatre productions, specifically set construction, stage lighting and facility support. Successful candidate must have basic wood working skills and experience with shop equipment. No theatre experience is required. On-the-job stagecraft training will be provided. Minimum of 20 hours per week starting at $8.00 per hour.

Duties:

Set Construction - assist set designer and volunteer crews in the cutting and assembly of materials for platforms, scenery(flats and set pieces) and props
Lighting - assist the lighting designer and volunteer crews in the hanging of stage lighting instruments to include cabling and positioning of gels
Sound - assist sound technician and volunteer crews with maintenance and
inventory of microphones, mixers, amplifiers, speakers, headsets, etc.
Other - Marquee - Post and remove letters on exterior marquee as needed
Theatre Exterior and Interior - operate vacuum cleaner and leaf blower
Prop and Costume Storage Areas - assist in storage and inventory

Supervision and Training: Work under the direction of the Technical Theatre advisor from a prioritized list of tasks submitted by production set/light/sound designers.

Expectations: Must be able to climb ladders to construct scenery, hang lighting instruments, gel frames and electrical cables.
Driver’s license preferred

Performance: Employee will be evaluated periodically with potential salary raises based on performance. Areas will include attendance, timely completion of assigned tasks, ability to function unsupervised and willingness to learn

An ensemble of eight women and five men from the Highland Lakes area have been cast for Southern Hospitality, the “down-home“ comedy set to open at the Hill Country Community Theatre December 1.

Although it takes the form of an hilarious farce, Southern Hospitality presents a true testament to Southern strength and ingenuity as the Futrelle sisters try to save their beloved hometown of Fayro, Texas, from extinction. The show is a sequel to HCCT‘s 2009 smash hit Christmas Belles and is written by the same playwrights, Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten.

Final auditions are scheduled for Monday, July 25, for Wait Until Dark, Hill Country Community Theatre's first production of its 2011-2012 season.

The cast for the dramatic thriller, which was a smash hit both on Broadway and as a movie, includes six men, one woman and one girl. The audition session is set for 7 p.m. and will be held at the theatre, which is located at 2003 W. FM 2147 in Cottonwood Shores. (click for map)

Written by Frederick Knott, the play opened on Broadway in 1966 and was a produced as a movie starring Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. in 1967. A Hitchcock-style thriller, the play probes which frightens more--the evil you can see coming, or the one you can't.

Directed by veteran actor/director Darrell W. Spencer, Ph.D., who recently moved to the Austin area from Nevada, HCCT's production of Wait Until Dark will open September 22 and run through October 2 with 7:30 p.m. performances Thursday through Saturday and 2:15 p.m. matinees on Sunday afternoons.

Currently operating on an all-volunteer basis, Hill Country Community Theatre is one of the oldest continuously operating community theatres in Texas. During its 25-year history, its productions have drawn audiences totaling more than 100,000. Some 5,000 volunteers from surrounding communities have given their time and support to HCCT's operations, from management to acting to all aspects of backstage and onstage production.

HCCT Announces 2011-2012 Season, Elects Three Board Members

At its annual membership meeting this week, the Hill Country Community Theatre Board of Governors announced its 2011-12 season lineup and elected three members to the board.

Returning to the board for second terms are Horseshoe Bay resident Maris Lynne Long, who is serving as president, and Marble Falls resident Mary Ann Fletcher, the theatre's vice president in charge of productions. Horseshoe Bay area resident Rick Mann is also joining the board. All three will serve three-year terms.

The 2011-12 season will open with the Broadway and movie hit thriller Wait Until Dark, set to run September 22 - October 2. The rest of the season lineup features four comedies, Southern Hospitality, December 1 - 11; Funny You Don't Look Like a Grandmother, February 15 - 26, 2012; Don't Drink the Water, April 26 - May 6, 2012; and the summer musical Into the Woods, July 19 - 29, 2012.

At the meeting, the board also kicked off its 2011-12 membership drive and announced no change in membership and ticket prices for the new season. Information on purchasing 2011-2012 HCCT patron memberships and season tickets is available through the HCCT box office, 830-798-8944.

Auditions are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, May 9 and 10.

The cast for the classic comedy includes roles for 35 men, women and children. Both audition sessions are set for 7 p.m. and will be held at the theatre, located at 2003 W. FM 2147 in Cottonwood Shores.

Based on the book by Frank Baum and adapted by Frank Gabrielson from the music and lyrics of the MGM motion picture score by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Hamburg, the much loved musical will be the final production of HCCT’s 25^th Anniversary Season.

David Bend, musical theatre director at Harmony School of Creative Arts in Marble Falls, will direct the play, scheduled to run July 14-24 at HCCT. Mr. Bend’s wife, Barbara Bend, Harmony School executive director, is serving as musical director for the production. The two co-founded Harmony School and have both participated in HCCT musical productions in the past.

Those auditioning should be prepared to read for a variety of roles, taking simple direction. They should also prepare a song to perform that shows their vocal range and be prepared to perform some stage movement to determine parts for the dance section. It’s a story of pirates and fair maidens, of honor and deception, wrapped up in a comedic opera.

Once again, Hill Country Community Theatre and Harmony School of Creative Arts are joining forces to present a student version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. Two performances will be presented at the theatre, 4003 FM 2147, Cottonwood Shores, one on Saturday, May 7, at 7 p.m., and the other on Sunday, May 8, at 2:15 p.m.

The play centers around the honorable Frederic who plans to leave the piracy on his twenty-first birthday. Desperate for a wife, he falls in love with young Mabel, one of several daughters of the Major-General. Indeed, the Pirate King intends for all the pirates to marry daughters, to their father’s grief. Enter some bumbling police and new information about the terms of Frederic’s indenture to the pirates, and the fray begins.

The 15-member cast, ages 9-14, has been rehearsing weekly at Harmony School since early February, under the direction of David Bend and with vocal coaching from Robert Schneider. Chandra Irvin serves as the choreographer.
