We’re also repeatedly being struck by the thoughtful, touching moments of truth the play offers. The depth, richness and broad scope of this play makes it accessible to any audience. I think it’s inevitable that everyone who sees ‘Charlie Cox’ will be compelled to reflect on it and talk about it.”
Awards and recognition have been overwhelming for Charlie Cox since it was first produced in 2003. The play was awarded the 2004 Carbonell Award and the 2003 Curtains Up Award for Best New Work. It was also named one of the "10 Best Plays of the Year" in 2003 by the Sun-Sentinel. The play has also been met with rave reviews from several major theatre critics. Christine Dolen of the Miami Herald called Michael McKeever’s play, "A joyous, uplifting work from a playwright who gets better with every story he tells." Jack Zink of the Sun-Sentinel remarked that Charlie Cox was, "A poignant treatise on life and love."
Todd Essary has been involved in theatre since 1998, beginning his career at Zachary Scott and the Vortex Theatre in Austin. Which frightens you more: the evil you can see coming, or the one you can’t?
The cast of Wait Until Dark, Hill Country Community Theatre’s first production of the 2011-2012 season, is working to bring that question to life as they rehearse for the play’s opening in September.
The cast for the dramatic thriller, which was a smash hit both on Broadway and as a movie, includes Steve Reily as Mick Talman, Preston Kirk as Sgt. Carlino, Mark Fernandes as Harry Roat, Priscilla Castañeda as Susy Hendrix, and Ocean Fillingim as Gloria. Teresa Bishop is serving as stage manager and veteran actor/director Darrell W. Spencer, Ph.D., who recently moved to the Austin area from Nevada, is the show’s director.
A “Hitchcock” style thriller, the play was written by Frederick Knott and opened on Broadway in 1966. In 1967, it was produced as a movie starring Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin and Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Spencer, who has an extensive background in both acting and directing as well as teaching dramatic arts in several liberal arts colleges, says he was attracted to directing Wait Until Dark partly because of the unique challenges presented by the dramatic thriller genre.
“Unlike most drama, where developing the characters is of key importance, in a thriller the situation has to be foregrounded,” he explains. “You have to keep people on the edge of their seats by developing the situation and leading the audience to relate to that situation through the characters.”
Wait Until Dark will open at HCCT, 4003 W. FM 2147 in Cottonwood Shores, September 22 and run through October 2 with 7:30 p.m. performances Thursday through Saturday and 2:15 p.m. matinees on Sunday afternoons.

Arts Reporting: Hill Country Community Theatre near Marble Falls Ends Paid Staff Positions
Received directly:
Hill Country Community Theatre to Return to All-Volunteer Status
NOVEMBER 11, 2010 -- Buffeted by the effects of the economic downturn, the Hill Country Community Theatre (HCCT) Board of Governors has voted to return operations of the theatre to an all-volunteer status and not retain paid fulltime staff to help run the 25-year-old organization.
The theatre was operated on an all-volunteer basis from its founding in 1985 until 1999 when it hired its first executive director. This most recent action translates into letting go the theatre’s two current fulltime staffers, Executive Director Jim McDermott and Production Manager Stephanie Ellis.
In making the announcement, Board President Maris Lynne Long stressed that the organization plans to go ahead with the four remaining shows slated for HCCT’s 2010-2011 season.
“The board is committed to presenting the entire season schedule,” Ms. Long said. “Everyone is feeling the effect of these economic times; everyone is having to scale back and the theatre is no exception. But we’ve proven in the past that the people of this community are capable of producing quality community theatre and we plan to do it again.”
The Miracle Worker, this season’s second show, is currently playing at HCCT through November 21. Three other productions are slated through the summer of 2011: The Odd Couple, which will audition January 3 and 4 and run February 17 through March 6; Steel Magnolias, scheduled to run April 14 through May 1; and The Wizard of Oz, slated to run July 14-31. HCCT’s 2010-2011 season opener, Dracula: The Musical?, played September 16 through October 3.
“We’ve succeeded on a volunteer basis in the past and we are confident that we can continue into the future with that model. We look forward to many successful future seasons with the support of our Hill Country communities,” the board president said.
She also thanked Mr. McDermott and Ms. Ellis for their hard work and dedication during their tenures at HCCT. “Both these folks have worked tirelessly to contribute their expertise and professionalism to HCCT. We appreciate that and we wish them well,” Ms. Long said.
