Corbian Dance Company returns with two classic stories told with spectacular glow in the dark electroluminescent wire (EL Wire) puppets. Broadway.com describes their puppetry as “an eye-popping display of storytelling that’s like nothing else you’ve ever seen.”

The Ugly Duckling

Of the five eggs in Mother Duck's nest, one is the largest and last to hatch. Bigger and paler than the others, this last hatchling is treated as an outsider by Mother Duck and her ducklings. He may be the best swimmer of the brood, but this alone is not enough to ensure his acceptance. Knowing only rejection, this Ugly Duckling goes out into the wild alone. Reflecting upon his plight under the glow of a remote willow tree, he sees a wily cat creeping in the direction of Mother Duck's nest. The Ugly Duckling follows and watches as one lagging duckling is captured and taken back to the cat's lair. In true heroic fashion, this Ugly Duckling succeeds in vanquishing the cat and rescuing the captured duckling. Celebrated by Mother Duck and her ducklings for his uniqueness, all realize that he may have been an ugly duckling, but he has grown into a beautiful and powerful swan.

The Tortoise and the Hare

Ridiculed by the Hare, the Tortoise challenges him to a race. They set off and the Hare takes a commanding lead right away. Thinking he will win easily, the Hare allows himself to be distracted with many modern day activities; texting, video games and the paparazzi, of course. The Tortoise continues to trudge along at his methodical pace and, despite the fact that the Hare is a swifter creature, wins the race due to his discipline and fortitude.
Electroluminescent creatures light up the darkness in a heart-rending original tale. Truly unique and visually dazzling, Darwin has been praised for its cutting edge blend of puppetry, technology, and dance by audiences all over the world.

Reviews

New York Post: “You can't get this at the movies or in a DVD.” “Darwin the Dinosaur teaches us why live theater will never go extinct.” – Leigh Witchel

LA Times: “It is a wonderful hour of fantasy that combines ancient, wordless storytelling with modern technology and music.”

Broadwayworld.com: “ . . . an eye-popping display of storytelling that's like nothing else you've ever seen.” “Corbian Visual Arts and Dance is a force to be reckoned with”

Here's the link for ticketing for the event, now being sponsored not by the Austin Creative Alliance, but instead by the B. THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR is joined by a whimsical cast of adventurous animals drawn from the pages of BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE? The poignant story of a young girl's unusal quest, PAPA, PLEASE GET THE MOON FOR ME, completes an hour-long performance, which both entertains and educates.

Performed by the touring company of Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, this much-anticipated new production, A Brown Bear, a Moon, and a Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle, brings together old favorites and new friends. Featuring evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry, the triple-bill celebrates three of Eric Carle's most beloved tales.

A veteran of more than 2200 performances, The Very Hungry Caterpillar joins a whimsical menagerie drawn from the pages of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? The poignant story of a young girl's unusual quest, Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me, completes a fanciful hour-long production that is guaranteed to entertain and educate a new generation of theatregoers.

Audiences familiar with Mermaid’s earlier adaptations of Eric Carle’s books can expect the same attention to detail that has won international acclaim for the company. The use of 'black light' for some aspects of the show will enable puppets and props to make their appearances as if they are animated on their own. The final story in the trilogy will incorporate the magic of both projection techniques and shadow puppetry. Multiple narrators add a new dimension, featuring the lyrical talents of Nova Scotia's Richard Donat, and a vibrant chorus of elementary school students from Hantsport School, situated on the shore of Nova Scotia's Minas Basin.

On the road continuously since 1999, Mermaid's The Very Hungry Caterpillar (a component of assorted compilations with four other Eric Carle stories) has generated remarkable statistics and earned considerable praise from audiences on several continents. Close to 1,500,000 spectators in twelve countries have applauded the ravenous green fellow.

First published in 1967, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? was written and illustrated by Bill Martin, Jr and Eric Carle, and has served to help hundreds of thousands of toddlers to associate colors and meanings to objects. Capturing the rhythmic text and beautiful tissue-paper collage illustrations of the classic picture book, Mermaid's adaption generates fresh appreciation of the endearing cast of characters.

Regarded as one of Eric Carle's most imaginatively-designed works, Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me, has been delighting young audience since its publication in 1986. Mermaid's version mirrors the book's stunning illustrations, drawn in thick, brilliant brushstrokes of blues and greens and dazzling reds. An unusual quest for a unique plaything - the moon - offers a splendid introduction to the wonderment of the lunar cycle.

Mermaid's accomplished creative teams, widely respected for their unique and well-travelled collaborations, have reprieved their roles to create Treasured Stories. Jim Morrow has ingeniously adapted the Carle stories from page to stage, as well as served as Director and Production Designer. Steven Naylor has created the musical score and overseen the recording of the narration. Daun Windover and Bob Williams contributed to videography and animation elements, while Struan Robertson and Deborah MacLean have lent their production and design skills.

The production's premiere performances at New York University's prestigious Skirball Performing Arts Center on October 13th, 2011, will mark the first of two hundred performances spanning an eight-month tour to eighteen states. Following appearances in major cities, including Richmond, VA; West Palm Beach, FL; Baltimore, MD; Houston, TX; Memphis, TN; St. Louis, MO; Pittsburgh, PA; Detroit, MI and Indianapolis, IN, the company will enjoy a month-long residency with the Chicago Children's Theatre, marking the second such engagement for Mermaid within two years. A special homecoming performance in Windsor, NS is scheduled for Sunday, June 9th, 2012 under the auspices of the Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre Entertainment Series.

It sounds so simple, just a quick trip to the Laundromat with Daddy, Trixie, and her beloved Knuffle Bunny. But, before you know it things go horribly, hilariously wrong. Chock full of adventure, song, and gigantic dancing laundry, this musical based on the Caldecott Honor-winning picture book by Mo Willems and presented by the Kennedy Center, celebrates the heart and heartache that can only come from a family visit to the local Laundromat.

When you subscribe to the Play-Time Series or donate to the theatre you will be invited to be a part of our pre-show craft activity. Before each of our play-time shows, our Skinny Gallery partners and season subscribers participate in a pre-show craft activity that is thematically related to the show. For example, for Seussical, all of the children involved got to make Dr. Seuss hats, and they made moon and bunny puppets for Goodnight Moon.

For this project we partner with Theatre Action Project, a non-profit theatre education organization. The purpose of the activity is to engage the children's imaginations and have them be a part of the theatrical experience before they enter the theatre. [Subscribe Here]

Arts Reporting: Paramount Theatre Selected for $25,000 grant by National Trust for Historic Preservation

Published at Preservation Nation, the blog of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, September 20:

Paramount Theatre, Austin

The votes have been counted in the ‘This Place Matters’ Community Challenge and we’re pleased to announce that the Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas has won the popular vote – and $25,000. Runners up in the month-long online competition were the Tinker Cottage Museum in Illinois; the Pemberville Opera House in Ohio; the Ohio Theatre in Madison, IN; and the Mead Building in Yankton, SD.

While only the Paramount Theater won a cash award, many participating organizations reported that the very process of participating in the Challenge elevated community awareness for their historic projects and even uncovered new volunteers and supporters.

After September 21, voters will be encouraged to return to the This Place Matters website to ‘vote with their pocketbooks’ by making donations to their favorite project. 100% of funds collected on the This Place Matters site will be passed to the individual organizations.

(Click for background and for September 20 response from the theaters' management, September 20)

The announcement came shortly after the following e-mailed appeal on September 7 from Ken Stein,Executive Director for the Paramount and State Theatres:

Paramount and State Theatres

I need your help while we keep the Paramount open during some significant plumping repairs occurring at the Theatre. If you have already made a donation in support of this project, I can’t thank you enough - but, read on for an update on how we are using your contribution.

The plumbing project I wrote you about a couple weeks ago has grown in scale and, therefore, more than doubled in cost.

Make a donation to ensure that the Paramount Theatre remains open while significant repairs are being completed.

Digging at the Paramount Theatre, Austin, TexasTo access pipes that are nearly 100 years old, a tunnel is being dug about 5 ½ feet under the Paramount’s lobby. It will extend the entire length from the north ground floor men’s lounge to the alley. The tunnel is being dug deep to ensure that the integrity of the historic interior remains undisturbed.

The expanded scope of the project is estimated to now cost the Paramount between $40,000 and $50,000. Your donation will go directly toward covering the cost of these much needed and immediate repairs.

Just like an old house, the Paramount Theatre requires a little extra TLC. Unforeseen repairs such as these occur in a 1915 building and that is why I need your help.

Barrels of material excavated at Paramount Theatre, Austin, TexasDuring this time, all of our regular programming is going on as scheduled. I’ll make sure to continue to keep you updated with photos and information on this important project.

Make a donation at this critical time and keep the Paramount Theatre in tip-top shape for the community for generations to come.

With sincere appreciation,

Ken A. Stein, Executive Director
The Paramount & State Theatres

PS. In honor of our Summer Classic Film Series, make a donation of $250 or more and receive your choice of DVD - Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) or The Money Pit (1986).
