HELL CAB by Will Kern

Directed by Stacey Connelly

Production design by Andrea Caillouet

May 16-June 2, 2013 Thursday, Friday and Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 2:30pm
Hellcab is a seventy-minute joy ride created through a collection of scenes from a day in the life of a Chicago cabbie. Director Stacey Connelly, playwright Will Kern and visual artist Andrea Caillouet bring a cabbie’s long day’s journey to life. Fares from a dangerous trio of druggies, a piggish mini-capitalist, a benumbed rape victim, a drunken woman on welfare, and a randy couple on the way to a motel are alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant. These sharply etched blackouts and cameos are capped by a stunning and very touching final scene.

“In an era of easy sex, a beautiful young couple learns that the hardest thing to find is true love.”

“How do you ask a girl out on a first date after you’ve already had sex with her? Can new love survive the meddling of nosy friends and the era of bed-hopping?" These are some of the questions that arise when a hot young couple finds each other in this racy comedy set in Chicago, 1976. A play that is equal parts raucous comedy and tender love story, David Mamet’s first masterpiece Sexual Perversity in Chicago depicts a story of intimacy’s elusive nature that is both timeless and universal.”

Watching ducks and ruminating on their behavior, two elderly men compose a beautiful fugue on the human condition - on family and friendship, the possibility of happiness and, not incidentally, the mating habits of water fowl.

Arts Reporting: Backlash for Upcoming David Mamet Visit

MFA Playwriting candidate Diana Grisanti as a guest commentator on the blog "The Deportee's Wife" attacks the decision of the Ransom Center to host David Mamet for small session workshops with students on March 9-10. She asserts that during a seminar last year Mamet used "hate speech" against Muslims, Arabs and women. UT faculty commented in reply to messages from her and others that student applications for the seminar outran spaces available by 10 to 1.

Excerpt from Grisanti's four-paragraph article of March 5:

Since we have not been heard at UT, we’d like the greater theatre community to know what’s up. Critics of Mamet’s plays and books often chock up the playwright’s incendiary remarks to a bad boy desire to get a rise out of people. I’d like to take it upon myself to excise the euphemisms. David Mamet is a racist and a misogynist, both in his work and his life. Many have forgiven Mamet because of his talent, but his skills as a dramatist have let him get away with murder–literally, if you take into account that hate speech leads to the normalization of bigotry which leads to the waging of foreign wars.

Ahhhh! A life in the theatre! The drafty halls, the penciled scripts, the stories you hear. The greasepaint–just vivid colors in oily goop, but somehow as evocative as Proust’s madelines–blah blah blah blah….

What is it with actors and their maddening romanticizing about life in the theatre? The surest traditions are long hours, lousy pay, inept producers, sweaty dressing rooms, falling scenery, and the wrath of critics.

The only thing that could make the job worse is some creepy old actor with an irrepressible desire to educate the uninitiated.
Here we have the young Zeb West (The Red Balloon) barely tolerating the wisdom and idiosyncrasies of the old Michael Stuart (The Fantasticks)—onstage and off—in this hilarious and touching send-up of the traditions, superstitions, and vagaries of the theatre.

Directed by Mark Stewart (Bomb Shelter: Or The Modern Pinocchio).

Tongue and Groove Theatre is a sponsored project of Austin Circle of Theaters. This project is funded and supported in part by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
